Sara Ali Khan Embraces Heritage with Exquisite Mayyur Girotra Couture Lehenga
Sara Ali Khan, known for her fashion choices, has clearly entered a “heritage connoisseur” era. For the recent Ganpati celebrations at the Ambani residence, she chose a stunning bespoke lehenga crafted by Mayyur Girotra Couture, a testament to his dedication to timeless textiles and artisanal craftsmanship.
The vibrant, custom-made lehenga is part of Girotra’s exclusive collection of heirloom pieces, created on request for clients who prioritize conscious choices over fast fashion. Inspired by his passion for preserving antique textiles and commitment to sustainability, the lehenga embodies his vision for heritage-inspired design.
The ensemble is made from five antique brocade sarees, meticulously collected over time by Girotra and his mother. “These drapes showcase incredible craftsmanship and timeless beauty,” he explains. “I wanted to repurpose these precious, pre-owned textiles, not only to create a new story but also to honor their heritage.”
Girotra skillfully transformed the sarees into multi-colored panels for the lehenga, each panel retaining its unique character while harmonizing with the others. A matching old brocade saree was used for the blouse, echoing the lehenga’s vibrancy and opulence. A tissue silk dupatta, adorned with an antique brocade border, completed the look.
While the eye-catching brocade lehenga needed no further embellishment, the dupatta was elevated with intricate zardozi and burnt dabka work. These ancient needlework techniques, rooted in the Middle East and Mughal era respectively, add a touch of regal grandeur to the contemporary design.
Dabka, an Arabic word for stamping, uses colorful threads to create complex geometric patterns, while zardozi, using gold and silver threads, reflects the rich history of Indian embroidery. Girotra emphasizes the use of vintage zardozi techniques, highlighting the intricate craftsmanship and time-consuming process.
“We aimed to create a connection between the past and present, evoking a sense of regal grandeur that still feels contemporary,” says Girotra. Sara Ali Khan’s stunning choice embodies not just beautiful fashion but also a deep appreciation for heritage and sustainable practices.
